When Should I Turn On My Sprinkler System?

As spring begins, it is once again time to turn on your lawn sprinkler system! Of course the BEST time for a spring start up is weather related and varies year to year, but anytime from the end of March right through May can be the best time to have your lawn and garden irrigation system activated. Spring Startups are also known as “Summarizing”, “Water Sprinkler Turn-On”, “In ground Sprinkler Start Up” and “Sprinkler System Set Up”.

During the winter season, most climates experience freezing temperatures and snow, which can be extremely harsh on your lawn sprinkler system’s components. The earth could have shifted, pipes could have cracked or corroded, and fittings could have come loose. Before you schedule your spring start up, you want to make sure that the ground is no longer frozen and is frost free. The reason is because if you have your spring turn on completed too early, and we experience freezing temperatures AFTER your water has been turned on for the season, the water in your system can freeze and potentially cause damage.

During a spring start up, your professionally trained service technician will follow a 10 Point Checklist and carefully go through your entire irrigation system. This includes opening the supply valves and pressurizing the supply lines, inspecting the main lines, backflow devices, valve manifolds and water mains for leaks, checking heads and emitters for proper operation and direction, and setting the control timer.

The best time to turn on your sprinkler will also depend on when you are having new landscaping/ plantings done. We always suggest to have your spring turn on completed BEFORE you have landscaping and plantings done to ensure that your new grass, flowers, and gardens will receive water immediately after planting. New landscaping can die in just a couple days if it is not properly irrigated, and must receive the correct amount of water to thrive. Once plantings are completed, we can always come back for seasonal head tweaks and adjustments, but you want to be sure your landscaping is being watered immediately.

When Should I Winterize My Lawn Sprinkler System?

As the fall season blows in, it is once again time to start thinking about winterizing your lawn sprinkler system! Lawn sprinkler winterization, also known as sprinkler shut down, fall closing, and winter blow out is the process of preparing your irrigation system for the cold winter months. The winterizing process will help to assure that the coming winter and freezing temperatures do not damage or compromise your sprinkler system’s components and piping.

The most popular question we get year after year is “When should I winterize my sprinkler system?”. October 1st thru December 15th (temperature permitting) is the optimal time window to winterize your irrigation system! While the weather plays quite a big role each year in determining when clients want to winterize their system, we strongly recommend winterizing your system during this time frame. The reason is because you want to winterize your sprinkler system BEFORE we experience several days of freezing cold temperatures, specifically below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water left inside in your sprinkler irrigation lines can freeze and cause extensive damage. Even if you have drained the water out of your irrigation system, some water will remain and can freeze, expand, and crack the PVC piping if your sprinkler system is not professionally winterized.

The second most popular question we get during the winterization season is “What exactly does Shambach Contrivers do to winterize my sprinkler system?”. You are in good hands with our Sprinklers’ team of professionals! All of the people on the Service Team are trained in the proper procedures to winterize any size underground lawn sprinkler or drip irrigation system. We will shut down all of the irrigation water supply sources and leave your clock in the “rest” position. A specialized air compressor paired with a regulator will then deliver the precise amount of compressed air (based on manufacturer specifications) that will correctly remove the residual water in all of the systems’ main lines, lateral lines, manifold and solenoid valves. The regulator eliminates over-charging a sprinkler line or drip line with too much air at one time. When properly performed, the sprinkler heads, solenoid valves and piping will not be compromised by excess pressure or friction by an improperly regulated air compressor. Your system is now ready with withstand the cold winter months!
